In this video, we explore the intriguing connections between a street name in Belgium and Beethoven's metronome practices. A friend from Leuven sent me a photo of Arthur de Greefstraat, named after the composer and pianist Arthur de Greef, who studied with Franz Liszt and was a significant musical figure in Belgium. We delve into De Greef's works and the fascinating tradition of historical tempi, particularly the Whole Beat Metronome Practice (WBMP), a concept that proposes two ticks of the metronome for one beat, making many 19th-century tempo markings feasible. We examine metronome marks in De Greef's etudes compared to contemporaries like Isidore Philippe and Camille Saint-Saëns, noting striking differences in tempo that suggest a transition from whole beat to single beat practice over time. This transition, although complex and gradual, sheds light on how musicians interpreted tempo markings. 📱 check out our recordings here: ▶https://www.authenticsound.org/record... -- 🙋Join our Patreon community and help us create more content▶ / authenticsound -- 📩Stay informed!
