The peninsula on which the Old City stands also contains the Tower of Hercules, one of the symbols of the city, which is an interesting Romanesque collection of streets, squares and medieval churches. Although A Coruña may have begun as a Celtic settlement, the city began to take on greater historical importance in Roman times, when the port became a key location in navigation routes. This period is attested by the Tower of Hercules, the only working Roman lighthouse in the world, and the symbol of the city. Now an official National Monument, it was built in the early 2nd century, during the rule of Emperor Trajan. It has undergone many changes over the years, the latest in 1791, when Charles III commissioned the architect Giannini to restore the tower and replace its cladding. The port has long been the scene of important historical events, such as the defeat in 1589 of the English privateer Francis Drake thanks to the resistance of the citizens, led by the heroic María Pita. La península en la que se asienta la Ciudad Vieja alberga, además de la Torre de Hércules, uno de los símbolos de la ciudad, un interesante conjunto románico de calles, plazas e iglesias medievales. Aunque el origen de A Coruña podría estar en un antiguo asentamiento celta, la historia de la ciudad comenzaría a cobrar relevancia ya en época romana, cuando el puerto coruñés se convirtió en un paso clave en las rutas de navegación. Testigo de la época es la Torre de Hércules, el único faro romano en funcionamiento y auténtico emblema de la ciudad. Actualmente declarado Monumento Nacional, fue construido a comienzos del siglo II bajo el mandato del emperador Trajano. Numerosas remodelaciones se han sucedido a lo largo de su historia, la última de ellas en 1791, cuando Carlos III mandó al arquitecto Giannini la restauración y el revestimiento del torreón. Desde siempre, el puerto ha sido escenario de algunos de los más importantes acontecimientos históricos de la urbe, como la derrota en 1589 del corsario inglés Francis Drake gracias a la resistencia de los coruñeses encabezados por la heroína María Pita. ¡Disfruta este recorrido!
