Abstract Art or Contemporary Art/ Artist When you talk about it the first name comes to mind is Jackson Pollock purely because he made the whole approach to abstract painting so abstract that you could never find a hidden meaning in it. It was pure action, a drip of paint he discovered while doing one of his early paintings. He got excited and decided to lose himself in it. He created magic. For me when I saw Jackson Pollock movie, i was so impressed and thought to myself, I can give it a shot. And that was the beginning of my journey to doing abstract. Slowly and steadily I started gaining confidence. Since I had studied illustration figurative drawing/ figurative abstract painting was my forte. I tried studying other artists along with Pollock, Arshile Gorky, Still, Newman, DeKooning, Mark Rothko, Philip Guston, Miro, Kandinsky and many others and understand the reason behind their work, their expressions. Most had moved to the United States after the world war II, which had a great impact on most artists life in that period of time. Chaos was moving out, simplicity was crawling in to their minds. As photography started getting more advance the need to paint realistic work started taking a back seat or started becoming less popular. The most common phrase we hear is 'I don't understand abstract paintings'. The thing any beginner artist needs to understand is that abstract art is a process that needs to be enjoyed, without really thinking or having an idea what he is about to paint. Its all unplanned. the painting starts taking some shape and only the creator of it knows when to stop. As you go along you will understand how it works. Unlike figurative art where you know what you want to paint and how you want to portray an emotion, abstract art is just the opposite. Avoid copying someone else's painting, understand their style and then try to render your thoughts in their style. Over a period of time when you try out different ways of painting you will figure out what you are good at, also discover what style suits you best to express yourself.
