Double & triple-headed intermodals with classes 68//8 & 90. ECML & NLL/GEML, January 2026.

We had the opportunity to catch as many as we could double-headed freightliner class 90s on the Great Eastern Main Line; something I've wanted to do for a long time. But first, although there were many diverted West Coast Main Line intermodal working through York, and the East Coast Main Line, only this one on Saturday 10th January attracted my attention: DRS classes 68 & 88 triple-header with 68004 ‘Rapid’, 88003 ‘Genesis & 68034 ‘Rail Riders 2020’ - 4M27 05:39 Coatbridge (DRS) to Daventry (p.14:07 127L). Diverted via the York ‘avoiding’ Slow lines (instead of platform 5) and into Holgate Down Loop where former standby rescue locomotive 68004 was coupled to the head of the train; it arrived some 94 minutes late and departed 127 minutes late. 68004 had been stabled in York Parcels Sidings for the fortnight as a rescue ‘Thunderbird duties’ loco while the intermodals were diverted off the WCML (as part of the Clifton M6 bridge renewal at Penrith). And the Freightliner double-headed class 90s seen on both the North London Line (NLL) and Great Eastern Main Line (GEML) on Thursday / Friday 15th/16th January: Caledonian Road & Barnsbury (NLL) - 90003 G&W Orange & Black livery & 90021 ‘Donald Malcolm’ Malcolm Logistics 100 Years livery - 4M94 Felixstowe North FLT to Daventry Int Rft Recep Fl (p.10:16 2E). Colchester Railway station - Plat.2 (GEML) - 90013 & 90006 both G&W Orange & Black livery with class 66 66568 Freightliner green livery - 4L67 Trafford Park FLT to Felixstowe North FLT (p.17:25 11L). Manningtree (GEML) - 90040 (FL) DB Cargo Red livery & 90014 G&W Orange & Black livery - 4M94 Felixstowe North FLT to Daventry Int Rft Recep Fl (p.08:59 1E). Ipswich (GEML) - 90045 Powerhaul livery & 90004 G&W Orange & Black livery. The pair eventually worked 4S88 14:33 Felixstowe North FLT to Coatbridge FLT from Ipswich that evening at 18:15.
