The walk starts with an evening visit to Galway's Christmas Market. Even in the rain, the market is busy with stalls, lights, and holiday activity. The following morning, we continue with a daytime walk around the city. We visit The King's Head pub, which dates back to the 13th century. At the end of English Civil War, in 1649, King Charles I was sentenced to death. Richard Brandon, Executioner of the City of London, refused to carry out the sentence. Legend has it that Richard Gunning volunteered to do the deed, and he received the building in payment. So the King's Head, is Charles I. The interior of the building has features dating back to that period. It is suffused in red light and they have there own Blood Red beer. I'm not a beer drinker, but I had to try it and it was actually very nice. Lynch's Memorial Window, no less macabre. According to local legend, the mayor of Galway, James Fitzstephen, hanged his son from the window of his home in 1493. His son had murdered a Spanish visitor. So, possibly, this is where the term Lynch comes from. It would take a long time to get to the bottom of all of Galway's stories, and I look forward to going back again at another time of year. I hope you enjoy the walk. Please consider subscribing to be informed of my upcoming trails.
