More than four decades after the 1979 Iranian Revolution, the laws introduced in its earliest months still shape the lives of millions of women. What began as promises of dignity and justice quickly transformed into a system of public punishment, mandatory dress codes, and morality enforcement. Within weeks of taking power, Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini ordered women in government offices to wear the Islamic hijab. Protests erupted across Tehran. But as demonstrations faded, enforcement intensified. Lashings were carried out in public streets. Revolutionary courts handed down swift sentences. By the early 1980s, strict religious law had been written into the legal code. In this video, we examine how the Islamic Republic formalized dress regulations, expanded moral policing, and turned social behavior into criminal offense. From the first hijab protests to public punishments and the rise of morality patrols, this is the story of how revolutionary ideals were reshaped into lasting state control. Decades later, the legal structure established in those early years remains in place — and its legacy continues to define daily life in Iran.
