INDIA: NEW DELHI: AT LEAST 60 PEOPLE KILLED AFTER FIRE IN MOVIE THEATRE

(13 Jun 1997) Hindi/English/Nat Fire raged through a movie theatre in New Delhi on Friday, killing at least 60 people. The victims were watching a war movie and apparently believed that the smoke billowing from vents was a special effect. Blackened ruins were all that remained of this cinema which was destroyed by fire in New Delhi on Friday. Although the police would not confirm numbers at least 60 people were believed to have died in the blaze. But the death toll is expected to climb beyond that figure. At least 200 others were injured - they were rushed to the All India Institute for Medical Sciences and Safdarjung hospitals for treatment. Most people died from asphyxiation caused by dense smoke from burning ceiling insulation. Witnesses told of dozens of people trapped in the balcony, as people fled the lower stalls in panic. Some survivors said it took fire trucks over half an hour to arrive. Three people took drastic measures to escape jumping from a second floor stairwell into the street to get away from the flames. Survivors were covered in black soot, shocked but relieved to be alive after their ordeal. SOUNDBITE: (Hindi) "It was really bad, the fire spread really fast, all those who came down perished in the fire, only those who went up to the roof have survived. A lot of bodies were found in the bathroom." SUPER CAPTION: Survivor SOUNDBITE: (Hindi) "There was heavy smoke all around, and everyone one was trying to find a place to get out." SUPER CAPTION: Survivor The one-thousand-seat Uphaar cinema in the southern Green Park suburb of New Delhi was nearly full. The blaze started soon after the intermission of the new Hindi-language war movie "Border" - based on the 1971 war between India and Pakistan. Many viewers thought the smoke was a special effect for a battle scene. Firemen were still evacuating people from the five-storey building more than two hours after the fire broke out, but later they said everyone was out of the movie hall. One fire officer said many people were badly hurt. SOUNDBITE: (English) "They were basically from the balcony, balcony and the box, and we can't say how many there could be dead. Looks like around 40 could be dead because they were in a very bad shape when they were taken out." SUPER CAPTION: R C Sharma, Fire Officer Hundreds of stunned relatives gathered at the hospitals where victims had been taken, hoping for good news. Many needed the support of family members and friends as the shock of the news sank in. Bodies wrapped in sheets were lined up on the floor of the reception area - slabs of ice were being brought so they would not decompose too quickly in the summer heat. Survivors said most of the victims were trapped in the balcony, when the false ceilings in the hall caught fire and billowed noxious smoke into the upper level. Movie-goers on the lower floor fled in panic, but most escaped. Groping through the darkened theatre, panicking people broke windows and doors to get out. SOUNDBITE: (English) "And I don't know - my presence of mind - I had this aunt with me, I held her hand and in the meantime my father, sister and uncle, they were lost. I held her hand and came down the stairs while the smoke was still coming up." SUPER CAPTION: Karan Kumar, Survivor In a stampede many people fled into a bathroom which had a sealed window, trapping them inside. Kumar's relatives did not manage to escape.
