This is Nelson, British Columbia — the mountain town where I grew up in the 1970s and 80s. Back then, it was a working-class mining and railway town on the brink of economic collapse. Jobs were disappearing. Families were leaving. Many believed Nelson would become a ghost town. Then Hollywood arrived. In 1987, Roxanne, starring Steve Martin, was filmed here — rebranding my hometown as “Nelson, Washington” and introducing its Victorian streets and mountain backdrop to the world. That film helped transform Nelson from a struggling resource town into a sought-after lifestyle destination. In this episode of Fierce Travel, I return with my husband Jeff to explore: • Nelson’s silver boom origins • The CPR rail yards where my father worked • The Doukhobors and Sons of Freedom • Japanese Canadian internment in the Kootenays • Vietnam draft resisters which caused Nelson to be dubbed “Resisterville” • And how a single movie helped reshape the town’s destiny Today, Nelson is known for yoga studios, heritage preservation, and million-dollar views. But beneath the postcard image lies a layered history — and a childhood that no longer exists. Can Hollywood really change a town? @Fiercetravel Photo & Archival Sources 1.
