Metropolitan Magistrate Sadbir Yasir Ahsan Chowdhury recorded the confessional statement of Sakal after DB Inspector Md Wahiduzzaman, investigation officer of the case, brought Sakal at his chamber this afternoon. After recording the statement, the magistrate sent Sakal, social welfare secretary of Buet unit BCL, to Keraniganj Central Jail. DB, in its forwarding report to the magistrate, said, Sakal, during his remand, has admitted that he along with other accused beat Abrar that led to his death and so Sakal agreed to give the confessional statement. A total of 16 people including Sakal were arrested in connection with the murder of Abrar. Abrar Fahad, a second-year student of Buet, was beaten to death early Monday. Denying the allegation that the law enforcers assaulted Abrar Fahad’s brother, Kushtia police today claimed that Abrar Fayaz tried to attack Buet vice-chancellor during his visit to Kushtia yesterday. Police said they did not raise hands on Abrar Fayaz, rather he attacked VC Saiful Islam. “Abrar Fayaz tried to attack Buet vice-chancellor when he went to Abrar Fahad’s village home at Roydanga in Kumarkhali upazila in order to visit his family members,” reports our Kushtia correspondent quoting Superintendent of Police (SP) in Kushtia Tanvir Arafath. “Police just prevented Fayaz, who was abusing the VC and at one stage tried to hit him,” the SP said. “We have several video footages to confirm what actually happened during the period.” the SP added. Kushtia police came up with the statement a day after Abrar Fayaz in a Facebook post alleged that Mostafizur Rahman, additional SP of Kushtia, raised hands on him. Fayaz’s FB account is now deactivated, the SP told the reports. “Police is trying to communicate with Fayaz,” he added. The SP urged that all should conduct their activities patiently so nothing unpleasant occurs. This correspondent could not add Abrar Fayaz’s comment as he was not willing to talk over the issue. When contacted, Abrar Fahad’s father said he was not aware of Fayaz’s FB post. Buet Vice-chancellor Prof Saiful Islam faced protests from locals when he went to visit Abrar Fahad’s home in Kushtia yesterday. He went to Abrar’s home, but could not go past the gate due to obstruction by a large number of people. The protesters demanded his resignation for Buet’s failure to stop such a gruesome incident. When the VC was about to leave the place, the wife of one of Abrar’s cousins laid down in front of his car. Police then removed her. Monirul Islam, additional commissioner of Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP), today said that police will investigate Buet student Abrar Fahad murder case upholding its highest level of professionalism and sincerity. “Abrar murder is a gruesome incident and it is our duty to put the accused on trial irrespective of their party affiliation upholding our professionalism and sincerity,” said Monirul, also chief of Counter Terrorism and Transnational Crime unit of the DMP. While addressing a press conference at the DMP media centre on Minto Road this afternoon, Monirul, responding to a query, said, “The people who were involved in the murder directly or indirectly will be put on trial. Just keep your faith in us.” He also called upon the people to help the law enforcement agency with providing them information in this regard if they have to ensure a fair trial of the case. Claiming that a total of 16 accused have so far been arrested in connection with the murder, Monirul said, “Our main focus is to find out the reason behind the killing.” Responding to a query about Amit Saha, a resident of Sher-e-Bangla Hall’s room-2011 where Fahad was badly tortured for five hours before he died, Monirul said Amit might not have been present there at that time, but he has direct or indirect responsibilities in this connection.
