Welcome back to Part Two of our Western Georgia Van Life adventure. We got our first view of the Black Sea after 15 months in Georgia at Poti, a port town in the north with a wonderfully picturesque red and white striped lighthouse. Constructed out of cast iron in London in 1862 and transported to Georgia by steamship, the lighthouse is a visual treat complete with a 153-step spiral staircase. We climbed to the top and I found myself singing the whole way up and down, the eerie echo is just incredible! I heard that Georgian song ‘Tolia’ on a record at Family Gallery Guesthouse in Racha months before, and it got stuck in my head. But I don’t know any of the rest of the words so I just hum along, ha. Tolia means Seagull - very apt! We found an early park up at the southern end of Shekvetili Beach to sit out some rain, get some work done, and watch the local fishermen. One of them brought us a bucket-full of free fish the next morning, check out our Instagram stories highlights part 2 to see how that went down 😅! We worked our way slowly down the coast, strolling the shore in search of colourful pebbles (for no good reason other than they’re beautiful!), and checking out the mires of Kobuleti Nature Reserve on the way. We spotted turtles, cranes, and frogs galore, and I fell in the mud. Joy. Then we took a trip to Petra. But not that one. It’s a 6th century ruined fortress on a hilltop above Tsikhisdziri hidden beach, which we walked down to after for a dip. We ended the day camping in front of a pine forest outside Kobuleti, one of the best camp spots along the Black Sea Coast. Here we met the first of many stray dogs in need of a good feed and vowed to buy bags of dog food the following day instead of giving away Del’s (very un-nutritious) biscuit supply.
