Closely related to the European Black elderberry Sambucus nigra and possibly a subspecies - Sambucus nigra subsp. canadensis, American Black Elderberry is a relatively common in the wild in its native range, more visible while in bloom in early summer. Sambucus canadensis is a valuable plant for supporting biodiversity, providing food and shelter for a wide range of wildlife, contributing to a healthy ecosystem. Elderflowers provide nectar for pollinators, and elderberries are a good food source for a variety of wildlife, including over 100 species of birds. As elderberries ripe in late summer, they are important to migrating birds. A variety of mammals consume elderberries and leaves. It provides shelter and nesting areas for birds and native bees, and is a host plant for a wider variety, at least 29 species of moths and butterflies larvae including two of the largest moths in North America: Cecropia moth and Polyphemus moth.
