During its first century or so as an imperial power, the Fatimids experienced a tremendous amount of success. From its humble origins in Ifriqiya, it rapidly expanded across North Africa and the Middle East. From 1021 onwards, however, the Khilafah went through a slow but sure decline. Whilst its far flung territories started to lose touch with Cairo, the khilafa encountered enormous social and economic problems at home in Egypt. Nonetheless, the Fatimid state trudged along and braved the numerous foes and issues it faced. In the process, leaving an indelible mark on Egypt and the territories it ruled.
