We created a "food forest island," where we added fertility to a small area around a mulberry tree. This makes that tree grow faster, but it also gave us a space to grow eggplants, jelly melons and a couple of sweet potato plants. The sweet potatoes didn't yield a lot due to the drought and perhaps the lack of fertility, so we're adding even more mulch by throwing sugarcane baggesse over the area and using it to expand the island. Just remember this: grow fast-growing crops and increase your soil fertility. Both of those will make your food forest grow fast and yield more in the early years.
