A bulbil is a small, vegetative propagule (a little clone) that forms on a parent plant. It’s like a tiny baby plant ready to detach, fall to the ground, and grow into a new individual. In simple terms: It’s not a seed. It’s not a tuber or rhizome underground. It usually grows on the stem, leaf axil, or inflorescence. When it drops off, it can root and grow on its own. Bulbils are common in some plant groups—like lilies, onions, and certain yams—but much rarer in aroids (the Araceae family). I'll show you the ones that do it like Pinellia. Among aroids, here are some known to produce bulbils or similar vegetative propagules: Pinellia (especially Pinellia cordata) This is the classic example among aroids. It makes little bulbils at the base of the leaves or in the leaf axils. These fall off and root easily, which is why Pinellia can spread aggressively. Arisaema (some species) A few Arisaema produce small bulbils around the tuber or in the leaf axils. For example, Arisaema flavum can form aerial bulbils on the stem. This is a handy way to propagate them vegetatively in addition to seed or tuber division. Some Amorphophallus Most other aroids (like Philodendron, Anthurium, Monstera, Colocasia) reproduce vegetatively by: Offsets and stolons (e.g., Colocasia esculenta makes runners with small corms). Rhizome division. Tuber sprouting. Layering. …but not true bulbils. If you’re interested in propagating aroids by bulbils specifically, Pinellia and some Arisaema are your best examples. 🍃 Subscribe to follow our creative plant journey / @aroid_artist 💚Download our FREE eBook ‘Propagating Aroids for Beginners’: https://www.aroidartist.com/propagati... 💚Love the artwork?
