As rain falls, a herd of gnu appears, and along with them come their natural predators, lions. A mother cheetah sets off with her cub to protect her from the lions. They travel as much as 20 kilometers each half day, and several days’ journey leaves the cheetah family near the point of exhaustion. When mother cheetah captures an infant topi, the mother topi threatens, desperate to recover her young. As a staring match between the two mothers continues, the cheetah cub makes a meal of the young topi and is saved. By the next day, mother cheetah is near the brink of starvation. When mother finally catches some prey, her daughter does what she has seen her mother do many times—she stands watch and lets her mother eat.
