WIRE I moved to London on the advice of Pandora my psychic friend after a crazy affair with an astral traveller. Looking for fame and fortune, adventure and family. Living in Notting Hill with my sister Steffi and Babs, her best mate who put up with my rock n roll lifestyle, occasionally joining in, were joyful days, Portobello Market, parties and picnics in Hyde Park. Skint but hopeful, I followed my nose, gigging wherever possible, working a handful of jobs and schmoozing with the best of em. I was on a mission! After an uneventful meeting in Crouch End with a lecherous “Agent”, I found myself in a local pub drowning my sorrows. And there was Jason, a friend from art school who I hadn’t seen for years! He was doing very well for himself, a successful photographer working on a Levis ad campaign. We spent the afternoon drinking and catching up. I gave him a demo as he was a fan of my work on the “House/Electro” scene, although this demo was a rock track, a song called “Screaming”, a real belter and quite a departure from my sultry House Diva tones. The following day I got a call from Mark, Massive Attacks manager, and a friend of Jasons, (who knew), looking for new vocalists, wanting a meeting having heard my demo! Was this luck, chance, tenacity, or the law of attraction, probably a combination of all these things. They needed a vocal and lyrics for the soundtrack to the movie ‘Welcome To Sarajevo”, a completed song in a few days as the deadline was looming for them. Serendipitous as we were living in a block of flats, many occupied by refugees from Bosnia, the fallout from this horrific war was quite literally on my doorstep. In fact we shared our flat with Zoran Toshic, an amazing artist from Sarajevo who had his own tragic story and had suffered countless losses. The theme being so close to my heart, in my living room in fact made this an opportunity not to be missed. I wrote and recorded the song that week, even made it to Abbey Road studios to watch Craig Armstrong conduct the Philharmonic Orchestra for the soundtrack. I had arrived.
