In July 2023 I joined 10 others on a Mongolian Mountaineering Expedition run by Jagged Globe. This 15 night trip headed initially to Ulan Bator. We took in a warm up peak there of Mt Tsetseguun (2,256m) which is the highest in the area. We then flew to Olgii in remote Western Mongolia. Here we awaited the lost baggage of more than half of our team before heading to the Altai Mountains on the western border with China and Russia via a long and bumpy drive. After a 5hr walk to Base Camp our camel train delivered our bags and we settled in to the comfortable location next to the Potaniin Glacier. The scenery of this area is fantastic, although the mountains are not as high as some in Asia. Our main objective was the highest peak in Mongolia, Mt Khuiten at 4374m. From BC we initially completed an acclimatisation walk to around 3600m on the Russian border. We then moved up to High Camp at over 3700m. The next day we planned Khuiten, but overnight high winds and some snow almost buried our tents and the next morning we had to rearrange our objective to a shorter climb of Nairandal (4180m). The peak of this mountain has the borders of Russia, China and Mongolia running through it! With another storm system expected the next day we decided to move back down to Base Camp that afternoon. The next day we climbed Malchin (4037m) from Base Camp before heading out. The trek out via the White River Valley was beautiful and all that remained was vodka, laughs and a mere 8hrs of bumpy gravel roads and the odd overheated engine to get us back to Ulgii, and then the flight back to UB. This was a fantastic trip, with an awesome group of people that really seemed to bond well together. Highlights were the wide open and empty spaces of Mongolia which is a beautiful and largely unspoilt country. Some of these images and videos were taken by other members of the Expedition team. https://www.jagged-globe.co.uk/news/r... Subscribe at / @jonhiclimb
