Esther Meek, philosopher known for her books, Longing to Know, Loving to Know, Contact with Reality and The Little Manual of Knowing Esther is currently a Professor of Philosophy Emeritus at Geneva College and is working on a new book about epistemology and the work of the artist. Links to some of Esther's talks follow the notes. The known, the unknown and the yet to be known We struggle to trust the Real Skepticism about knowing and skepticism about the real Descartes cast a suspicion and methodical doubt on all outside of himself in a search for certainty which he was only able to find in himself. Acedia: the refusal to consent to Being Hope means that we have the option to consent, to say Yes to Being. Hope is a sense of possibilities, a sense of options and a prospect of the good. Reality turns the table on us and walks into our lives. Philosophical questions are tacit commitments about What's real (metaphysical philosophy) How to understand the real (epistemology) What we are to do with it (metaphysical ethics) Who we are (philosophical anthropology) Developing a metaphysics of the lively real, of things - the good, true and beautiful. Wanting to make itself known to you. We need to treat with integrity the materials of our work and our half-understood vision. Love and trust your materials, and love and trust that which you're looking towards (your vision) When you find your purpose, you also find the most wonderful freedom. Find the things in your life that you do trust, lean into them, as a gardener can lean into her garden. Attend. Listen. See stuff. Listen to the dirt. Get to know and love all the materials of your garden. Half-understanding means entrusting yourself to the process. Anticipative knowing is a clue. That's what's intoxicating about the Real. Subsidiarily indwelling to invite the Real. Subsidiary focal integration. Think of a skill that you do easily. How did you get there? Clues. Normative. Situational. The felt body. Indeterminate future possibility. The Modernist approach is commodifiable with bits of transferable info dyou can commodify. We expect knowing to be instantaneous. We should see this not either as knowing fully or falling short of knowing, but of knowing fraught with possibilities. Filled with mystery. Always opening up to possibilities and learning to trust them. Suffering is also a way of extending our knowing communion with ourselves, with God and with each other.
