Long before Walt Disney thought of Mickey Mouse, scores of talented artists and craftspeople worked both together and separately to develop the animated art form. In Cartoon Carnival, a behind the scenes documentary, we unearth a treasure trove of early animated films and the stories of those who made them. Featuring pioneers like J. Stuart Blackton, Émile Cohl, Winsor McCay and J.R. Bray and characters like Bobby Bumps, Felix the Cat, Dinky Doodle, Gertie, Koko the Clown and many more – Cartoon Carnival tells the story of animation's earliest days whilst also telling the story of ongoing efforts to preserve and promote this neglected corner of cinema history through the lens of Tommy Stathes, an archivist and historian on a mission to uncover as many lost gems as possible and show them to as many people as possible! Cartoon Carnival features interviews with – amongst others – Jerry Beck, John Canemaker, Kenneth Brownlow, Peter Lord, David Gerstein and many more.
