Stu Ellis The success of Holmes Farms is built on strong risk management, good relations with employees and land owners, and solid grain marketing according to Rick and Corey Holmes.. Corey Holmes Holmes farms was started in 1978 by Rick Holmes, He’s my father, he started right there in New Holland on a couple hundred acre farm. We just kind of continue to grow from there. Now we are in 13 counties across Central Illinois, spanning 100 miles east to west and 50 miles north to south. Stu Ellis And that helps manage weather risk Corey Holmes We can have great crops in a lot of the areas and we can have a couple poor areas as well, but all of our eggs are not in one basket in one little corner of a county. Stu Ellis Employee relations is important Corey Holmes We have a really good group of guys. A lot of them have been with us ten-plus years. We don’t have a lot of turnover, we work as a big team, really. They take care of me as well as I take care of them. They do a good job for me. I’ve got one of the best teams in Central Illinois. Stu Ellis And Rick says that spills over to landowner relations. Rick Holmes We’ve had good contacts with a lot of people. We’ve got a lot of people that are investors in land because of low interest rates at the banks, and that’s kind of give us an inside track to helping some of them make money along with us, and we both know what our margins are and we both make money at it. Marketing is still the key. You’ve got to know your cost and you’ve got to know what you’ve got to market it for, and getting it done ahead of time. Corey To keep this agriculture community growing, its teaching the young ones all about it, how it works. We try to keep our kids involved, and want to stay involved in the community.
