#filipinocountrysidelife #foreignerinthephilippines #foreignerandfilipina #nature #islandliving Today we will build a hut, also known locally as a bahay kubo. The Bahay Kubo is a house built with local materials such as wood, bamboo and nipa. The architectural principles of the bahay kubo are based on the basic needs of the Filipinos. This nipa hut will be a rest house for us and our caretakers. We chose a spot near a ravine, a very good spot because it's relatively flat and there are big trees nearby. The construction of our hut started with 6 pillars. My husband helped with the construction and his tools made it easier. They also used traditional building tools like chisels, nails, hammers and a handsaw. While the men are busy building, I prepare our lunch. Here I made a makeshift kitchen. I grilled a milkfish and some eggplants, then made a salad of tomatoes and onions. Eating here is very nice, like a picnic. The air is fresh and only the sound of birds can be heard. After lunch, we continued to build our hut. Little by little the frame of our little hut is coming together. The next day we continued to build our hut. The frame is finished and this is the exciting part, installing the nipa roof. Jan-jan is cutting the end of the nipa while Dary is making the bamboo needle, they call it agoha. They will use a plastic rope to tie the nipas together. Boris decided to give it a try and did a great job. For lunch I cooked a bamboo shot with ferns and coconut, ground beef and salad. We had a very tasty lunch. The next day Dary and another worker finished the roof of our hut. They will put a piece of metal roofing in the middle to prevent rain water from dripping. The construction of our bahay kubo took 3 days to finish. We decided to come here and unpack a housewarming gift that our subscriber gave us. Inside are various kitchen utensils such as measuring cups, knives, cutlery, graters, and more. We are so grateful, this is such a nice gift for us.
