The Name Punjab Comes From Two Persian Words, Panj Meaning Five, And Aab, Meaning Water, Together This Words Imply “land Of Five Waters.” This Refers To The Five Major Rivers Of The Historic Punjab Region (Before 1947), The Jhelum, Chenab, Ravi, Beas, And Sutlej. All This Five Rivers Are Tributaries Of The Indus River, Which Flows Along Punjab’s Western Side. Although The Beas River Now Lies Entirely In India, It Was Historically Included As One Of The Five Rivers Of Punjab Before The Partition Of British India In 1947. The Term 'punjab' Was First Popularized In Persian Chronicles And Became Widely Used During The Mughal Era. However, Even Earlier, The Region Was Known By Its Sanskrit Name, "Pancha-nada" Where “pancha” Means Five, And “nada” Means River. Just Like Its Persian Counterpart, It Meant “land Of Five Rivers,” And It Appears In Several Ancient Indian Texts. Punjab Has A Predominantly Flat, Fertile Landscape, Making It The Agricultural Heartland Of Pakistan. Its Landscape Mostly Consists Of Fertile Alluvial Plains Of The Indus River And Its Four Major Tributaries In Pakistan, The Jhelum, Chenab, Ravi, And Sutlej Rivers Which Traverse Punjab North To South. The Soan River Is The Primary Drainage System, Flowing East To West And Cutting Through The Plateau, Along With Several Smaller Streams, The Potohar Plateau Is Also Part Of The Transitional Zone Between The Fertile Plains Of Punjab And The Mountainous Regions Of The North, Making It Ecologically Diverse With Semi-arid Vegetation And Scrub Forests. Punjab, Along With Its Fertile Landscape, Also Features Two Main Desert Regions. Thal Desert And The Cholistan Desert. The Thal Desert Lies In Central Punjab Between The Jhelum, Chenab And The Indus River, While Cholistan Desert, Which Is A Part Of The Larger Thar Desert, Occupies The Southeastern Part Of The Province.
