(19 Sep 1995) English/Nat Some of the puppets in the cult 1960s' TV series Thunderbirds go up for auction today Tuesday. Sylvia Anderson, ex-wife of their creator Gerry Anderson, is selling them because she says they are too valuable to keep at home. By today's high-tech standards they are fairly basic, but that doesn't mean they come cheap. They are each expected to fetch thousands of dollars. The characters for sale range from obscure bit part marionettes to the indestructible Mysteron-bashing hero Captain Scarlet. His looks are reputed to be based on Carey Grant's. He's worth an estimated 30 thousand dollars. Another pint-sized star under the hammer is the beautiful Marina from Stingray, and the hero of every schoolboy nerd, Jo 90. Stealing the show is Lady Penelope modelled on Sylvia's 1960s' self. The posh blonde who used to be driven around in a pink Rolls Royce by her chauffeur Parker even had Sylvia's voice. She is expected to fetch 25-thousand dollars. Compared to today's sophisticated puppets, these pioneering puppets are very low-tech indeed. SOUNDBITE: "Well it was fairly basic by today's standards but obviously at the time they had to invent how to make the mouths and the eyes and the characterisations work all off the top of their heads. If you actually look inside the heads they're very basic, there's lots of safety pins and just bits and pieces of stuff that they could find handily to make the mechanisms." SUPER CAPTION: Kegan Harrison, Phillips Auctioneers For the less wealthy fan, there are hundreds of puppet parts available for those determined to own a little piece of a cult.
