The Institute of Smart Systems and Artificial Intelligence at Nazarbayev University hosted a guest lecture titled "AI Horizons: A Conversation with Global Leaders", by Professor Peter Norvig, Distinguished Education Fellow at Stanford's Human-Centered Artificial Intelligence Institute and a researcher at Google Inc, Professor John Hopcroft, Turing Award Laureate and Professor Emeritus of Computer Science, Cornell University and Professor Merouane Debbah, Professor at Khalifa University of Science and Technology (UAE), Researcher, Educator and Technology entrepreneur. Distinguished guests joined the session and thoughtfully answered questions gathered from the NU community, sharing their insights and experiences with genuine openness and warmth. 0:00 Introduction by Prof.Varol 2:57 Prof. Hopcroft answered the question: “We often hear that data is the new gold in AI. Do you think the future of AI progress depends more on collecting big large datasets, or on building smarter algorithms that can learn from less data?“ 4:58 Prof. Norvig emphasizing the importance of data 6:00 Prof. Debbah answered the question: “We often hear that data is the new gold in AI. Do you think the future of AI progress depends more on collecting big large datasets, or on building smarter algorithms that can learn from less data?“ 8:55 Prof. Hopcroft answered the question: “With the dominance of empirical, data-driven deep learning, what is the role of classical computer science like automata, complexity theory, and formal logic in the future of AI?” 11:01 Prof. Norvig answered the question: “The computational cost of training state-of-the-art models is staggering, leading to significant energy consumption and environmental concerns. Is this trend of "bigger is better" sustainable? What should we do to create "green" AI?” 13:35 Prof. Debbah answered the question : “How can university students stay competitive in the era of AI? Which majors do you recommend to study?” 17:09 Prof. Hopcroft answered the question: “What could be the potential applications of Gen AI in education?” 19:24 Prof. Norvig answered the question: “How might AI fundamentally change the scientific method itself? Could AI systems move from being tools for analyzing data to autonomous agents that formulate hypotheses, design experiments, and drive new discoveries in physics or biology?” 21:45 Prof. Debbah answered the question : “How might AI fundamentally change the scientific method itself? Could AI systems move from being tools for analyzing data to autonomous agents that formulate hypotheses, design experiments, and drive new discoveries in physics or biology?” 25:50 Prof. Hopcroft answered the question: “Current AI models already can receive a gold medal in International Math Olympiads. In which cognitive tasks, humans will continue to have an edge?” 29:16 Prof. Norvig answered the question: “Are transformers the right architecture to achieve Artificial General Intelligence?” 32:00 Prof. Debbah shared his opinion the inference systems 32:30 Prof. Debbah answered the question : “Much of the recent AI progress has been in the digital realm of language and images. How crucial is physical embodiment and interaction with the real world (robotics) for developing more robust, general intelligence?” 34:54 Prof. Hopcroft answered the question: “How can a country like Kazakhstan find a competitive niche in today's AI industry?” 36:26 Prof. Norvig answered the question: “As AI models become more complex, they also become more like "black boxes." How critical is interpretability and explainability for the future of AI, especially in high-stakes domains like medicine and law?” 38:55 Prof. Debbah answered the question: “What could be the potential applications of Gen AI in education?” 44:56 Prof. Hopcroft gave advices to the students to guide their career 46:23 Prof. Norvig gave advices to the students to guide their career 47:21 Prof. Debbah gave advices to the students to guide their career
