In this video , DOCTOR SUICIDE : WHY ARE DOCTORS KILLING THEMSELVES, I go over the serious, and necessary topic of mental illness amongst health-care workers, and namely those in anesthesiology. School and residency training was particularly challenging with my young ones in tow, so I’m well aware of the dark and seemingly impossible times someone can face while on this journey to medicine. The current pandemic can make this stress even worse, so it’s important to remember to self-evaluate as well as look out for your colleagues for the signs of mental illness. The taboo of depression and suicide amongst physicians is a detrimental one. Awareness needs to be increased and interventions/supporting services need to be made available and in a judgement-free way. If you or a colleague is experiencing depression, anxiety, or any other mental health concern, PLEASE seek help. Your life is important, and you are NOT alone in this.
