Starting at Terminal 1, Gate 8 in New York‘s John F. Kennedy Airport this Lufthansa flagship, their magnificent A380, had to take a taxi route, which is probably the longest one available at JFK. As Runway 31R was partially closed due to construction work, only the 22 Runways were available and opened for heavy departures that day, so taxiing there took almost 25 minutes, passing by Terminals 8, 7 and 5. When passing Van Wyck Expy and JFK Expy, one could get another glimpse of how massive the A380 is by looking down the bridges seeing the A380s wingspan actually exceeding the bridges‘ width. Another interesting thing, one can rarely encounter is to see is that a Runway change (22L was initially planned, but LH401 had been switched over to the longer 22R, which is located closer to JFK’s terminals) improved the performance, so the pilots could raise the flaps again by one setting (to 1+F) before taking off. An A380 liftoff is always so amazingly quiet and seeing the ailerons starting their “dance“ immediately after liftoff is still so delightful, so it was on that sunny June day in 2019.
