In honor of his legacy, we are sharing a special video series over the course of two weeks, featuring key naval battles as recreated in the MBC historical drama “500 Years of Joseon – Imjin War.” Today, we present the third installment, focusing on the Battle of Hansando. In 1592, only a few months after the Japanese invasion of Joseon, the capital of Hanyang had fallen, and the entire nation was gripped by fear and chaos. With repeated defeats on land deepening the nation's despair, Admiral Yi Sun-sin turned the tide of the war with a single, decisive battle. Off the coast of Hansando, he devised a meticulous strategy to lure the main Japanese fleet into open waters then unleashed the legendary Crane Wing formation to encircle them. Like the wings of a crane outstretched to trap its prey, the ships of the Joseon navy spread out in a symmetrical arc, cutting off the enemy’s retreat and delivering a devastating barrage of cannon fire. As a result, numerous enemy vessels were either destroyed or captured, and the Joseon navy secured complete dominance at sea. Following this battle, the Japanese forces came to fear Joseon’s naval power, abandoning plans for sea-based supply lines and coastal invasions.
