The deaths of 10 republican prisoners during a year of hunger strikes, beginning in October 1980 and ending 12 months later in 1981, was a seminal event in Northern Ireland’s troubled history. While the impact at the time was enormous both nationally and internationally, long-term consequences have proven to be equally, or possibly more, important. Governments in London and Dublin began to re-evaluate the situation and recalibrate their response while the IRA leadership also reflected on the outcome. These deliberations played no small part in subsequent developments. Tommy McKearney is a former IRA member who was part of the 1980 hunger strike. He is the author of The Provisional IRA: From Insurrection to Parliament.
