On today’s Beachcombing adventure along the Texas coast, we’re taking a closer look at a growing marine-debris problem: yellow plastic salt bags washing up on our beaches. These heavy-duty bags come from the shrimping industry, where the salt inside is used to keep shrimp looking fresh and to help separate catch from bycatch during sorting. What makes these finds especially concerning is the evidence clearly visible on many of them: sea turtle bite marks. 🐢 Sea turtles often mistake these floating plastic bags for jellyfish or other prey, leading them to bite into the material.
