Looking for a beautiful way to embellish your wedding dress? Join me as I add lace applique onto a plain bridal gown and see how to place and sew on your applique. Watch to the end to see the finished result, and leave me a comment if you'd like to find out how to source lace applique for your project. You'll need a sharp needle and some thread, the same color as the applique itself, so the stitches won’t be noticeable. You may prefer to work methodically from left to right or from top to bottom. I just work my way around the design, and I try not to be tempted to fill in the negative space in between the applique. Once you've taken the bodice with the pinned applique off the person that you've been pinning it on, or your mannequin, and you lay it down, it can sometimes look gappy. But resist adding extra pieces at this stage – you can always add some at the end. Trust your original placement and avoid losing your design. Fill in too many gaps and it will look like a mass of odd shaped bits of lace, and not a design. Tip - while you are sewing them on, I would suggest working your way around each applicue at a time before you move on to the next. This is because if you need to alter the bodice later, or you decide you want to move a piece, you can just take off one applique, make the adjustment, then put the applique back, rather than having to move lots of them. It is much quicker to sew a applique on by machine, and this is ideal if you are working on a flat panel, but if you've already made the bodice, like I have, you're going to be trying to machine sew around curves and possibly boning, which is nigh on impossible. Also, if the applique is beaded, the sewing machine needle can tend to break, and you have less control. I find hand sewing very mindful and enjoy the pleasure of the rhythm of stitching. I hope you will too xx
