In the history of Hungarian criminology, a brutal execution took place on February 11, 1998: during the afternoon rush hour, media mogul János Fenyő was gunned down with a submachine gun. It took no less than 27 years for this extremely serious crime to be – still not entirely – solved, and for a final court ruling to be reached. A few days ago, the Budapest Court of Appeals sentenced media entrepreneur and former sports executive Tamás Gyárfás to 7 years in prison. According to the court's reasoning, Gyárfás commissioned Tamás Portik to have János Fenyő – the head of the VICO empire and his business rival – assassinated. The judgment states that Portik in turn hired Slovak hitman Jozef Rohác to carry out the brutal murder. According to the court’s final ruling, both Gyárfás and Portik are considered instigators in the case. The second defendant, Tamás Portik, received a life sentence.
