Spotting a drowning victim is not easy – as a drowning does not look like a drowning. In most cases, drowning people are unable to call out for help, as the body is focusing on breathing – not speaking. So these are the signs to look for: The person’s head is low in the water, with their mouth at water level. Their head is tilted back with their mouth open. If you are close enough – you will see their eyes are glassy and empty. Unable to focus. Their hair may be over the forehead or eyes. They are not using their legs and are vertical – it’s your bodies response to stay upright in the water, with no evidence of a supporting kick. Drowning people can only struggle on the surface of the water from 20 to 60 seconds before submersion occurs. They will be hyperventilating or gasping You will notice them trying to swim in a particular direction, but not making headway. They may be trying to roll over on to their back and appear to be climbing an invisible ladder. If you see someone in trouble, call out for assistance Surfers Rescue 24/7 is a Play it Safe by the Water Program with the support of Surfing Victoria, the Victorian Government, Life Saving Victoria, Surfing NSW and Surfing WA
