SOUNDBITE: (English): Sheikh Fadhel Al-Sahlani, Imam at Al-Khoei Islamic Centre, a Shiite mosque: "Removal of Saddam from the power is the dream of the majority of Iraqis. And hopefully this dream will come true soon. Bombarding Baghdad heavily, it is another crime of Saddam, we would consider it a crime of Saddam, and hopefully it is the last crime. Because he has been given an alternative to leave Iraq and he didn't. So whatever bad result comes from the war, we would consider it also a crime of Saddam." 10. Wide shot prayers 11. Medium shot prayers 12. SOUNDBITE: (English): Haedar Mohammed, fled Iraq after the Gulf War in 1991, has lived in U.S. since 1997, has two sisters and their families still in Baghdad: "I don't know where the targets are because they (the Iraqi government) have things in between the residential areas, but they (his sisters and their families) really live in residential areas, there's nothing important in there, but there might be something new, right there, I never know, and I feel very very concerned about their safety." 13. Wide shot of prayers 14. SOUNDBITE: (English): Sheikh Fadhel Al-Sahlani, Imam at Al-Khoei Islamic Centre, a Shiite mosque: "It's nothing to do with the religion. It is the politics, yes there are many other aims besides removal of Saddam, yes, that's possible, but as far as the religion is concerned, I don't feel that this is against the religion." 15. Medium shot of prayers STORYLINE: Many of the worshippers at the Al-Khoei Islamic Center in New York City are Iraqis, and they are no supporters of Saddam Hussein. They are members of Iraq's Shiite majority which has been heavily persecuted under Saddam's rule. Many of them fled the country after Hussein came to power. During the Friday prayers, the Imam denounced Saddam as a man who has nothing to do with Islam, who is an enemy of Islam. News of the massive "shock and awe" bombardment of Baghdad broke after the prayer service concluded -- the Imam said that this bombardment is Saddam Hussein's fault. Many of the worshippers still have family in Iraq. Haedar Mohammed's two sisters and their families live in a Baghdad residential neighborhood. Mohammed says he hopes the Iraqi government has not stashed any militarily valuable objects in their neighborhood. Responding to accusations often heard abroad that America is waging a war against Islam, the Imam said America's motives for the war may be complicated, but that it is not at all a war against Islam. The year 2000 census in the U.S. listed just over one thousand two hundred Iraqi immigrants in New York. The Imam said about twenty-five Iraqi families worship at the Al-Khoei Islamic Center. Most agree that Saddam is a dictator and must go. But many say they had hoped for a peaceful solution in a country long crippled by war and violence.
