This massive, double-trunked Shagbark Hickory was the largest tree to fall in our yard during Hurricane Helene. After tackling most of it the week following the storm, I’m finally cutting the last of the logs near the root ball. Working with uprooted trees this size can be risky, especially with the root ball potentially jerking the tree back upright if it outweighs the remaining trunk. This was my first experience handling a large, uprooted tree, and it didn’t make it easy—positioned on an uphill slope with a trunk much wider than my chainsaw bar could cut through, and minimal exit options near the base. In the end, I now have 17 impressive 9-foot logs ready for milling. Join me as I take on the final cuts! Experienced tree fellers/buckers will probably cringe.
