(17 May 1997) Natural Sound Space shuttle Atlantis slid up to Russia's orbiting Mir station early on Saturday and docked to drop off equipment urgently needed to ensure the crew has breathable air. The link-up occurred nearly 250 miles (400 kilometres) above the Adriatic Sea. The two space craft will remain united for five days - during that time, U-S and Russian crewmembers will conduct joint science experiments. Orbiting Earth, the space shuttle Atlantis headed for Mir for its link-up with the Russian space station. The docking took place at 0234 GMT on Saturday, 250 miles (400 kilometres) above the Adriatic Sea. Part of the shuttle's mission is the delivery of urgently needed equipment for Mir. The gear includes a new oxygen generator; detectors for fumes; a valve for a spare carbon dioxide-removal unit; lithium-hydroxide canisters to purge carbon dioxide from the air and clamps, hoses and plugs. The oxygen generator is the most important piece of equipment and will be installed in Mir over the weekend. Both primary oxygen generators aboard Mir broke down in March. It forced the crew to use oxygen-producing canisters similar to those believed to have caused the fire in the ValuJet plane which crashed in Florida's Everglades a year ago. In fact, one of the Mir canisters caused a small fire in February aboard the Russian station. Also on board the shuttle is British-born astronaut Michael Foale, who is to replace his American colleague Jerry Linenger on Mir. Foale is expected to stay on the Russian space station for four months before being picked up again by Atlantis.
