Few voices in rock are as instantly recognizable as Joe Lynn Turner. From his early days in Hackensack, New Jersey, to fronting Rainbow, Deep Purple, and countless collaborations, Turner has lived the full arc of rock and roll—from smoky clubs to stadiums, from vinyl to streaming. In this candid conversation, he opens up about his roots, mentors, career highlights, and his fearless views on the world today. Born and raised in Hackensack, NJ, just outside New York City, Turner spent over 25 years in the area before moving to New York, California, and eventually traveling the globe. Yet Hackensack always remained home: “I still have a house back there, my daughter and grandkids are there, my sister’s there, and a lot of my guitars are there too.” Among Hackensack’s notable musicians was Leslie West of Mountain, who gave a young Turner guitar lessons and later became a lifelong friend and collaborator. Although Turner briefly studied music formally, he admits traditional lessons didn’t inspire him. Instead, Leslie West’s teaching on tone, technique, and attitude left a lasting mark.
