Album cover designed by Reid Miles, photo of a "Will Be Back" sign, seven handed clock; Reid did a lot of covers for Blue Note Landmark album in Avant-Garde Jazz; Avant-Garde is a generic terms, includes free and other boundary pushing styles; also linked to similar movements in painting, literature and 20th century classical music; in military terms, the “advanced guard” Bobby Hutcherson recalled that original trumpeter Eddie Armour left the session, refused to play the music! Appears with Hubbard on Ornette Coleman’s Free Jazz Free Jazz is just that “free” whereas avant-garde is a more general term encompassing any boundary pushing music; what is avant-garde changes with the perspective of time Tony Williams just turned 18 a few months before recording! Dolphy moved to Europe after this recording; from the liner notes: "I'm on my way to Europe to live for awhile. Why? Because I can get more work there playing my own music, and because if you try to do anything different in this country, people put you down for it." Notice his style is much more angular than Coltrane, more rhythmically adventurous - watch video Tracks (All compositions by Eric Dolphy) Side A "Hat and Beard": "Hat and Beard", reference to Thelonious Monk; bass starts with repeating phrase, Dolphy doubles on Bass Clarinet; notice very free time concept in drums; non-functional harmony, very avant-garde; notice how vibes give more open sound than piano; opens in 5/4 and then moves to 9/4 "Something Sweet, Something Tender": angular ballad with opening interlude; very composed, but very modern, avant-garde; notice bowed bass by Richard Davis; lots of duets with bowed bass and bass clarinet "Gazzelloni": like hard bop with an avant-garde twist; melody is more angular; notice flute; named after classical flautist Severino Gazzelloni; band plays together for 13 bar head, then pretty free Side B "Out to Lunch": opening drum interlude, reminiscent of Art Blakey blues march; lots of broken time, but Williams keeps pulse going, keeps it moving; "Straight Up and Down": like a drunk walking, very free
