I had no plan that evening. Just the urge to get out along the beach in Gumbet Bay near Bodrum and see what the light would give me. What I found was this — a Turkish daybed sitting in shallow water, a gulet moored alongside it, and a completely cluttered foreground with no clear composition no matter where I stood. Then I spotted a rooftop restaurant behind me. The guy on the desk said no problem. Five minutes later I was up the steps, tripod set, and the composition was perfect. The sun had already set by the time I was ready, which turned out to be exactly right — that brief window I call "the edge of darkness" where the sky saturates and the water takes on a cool glow.
