When Sonabai was in her mid-teens, her parents married her to an elderly widower. He built for them a house way outside his farming community in Chhattisgarh, central India. Once the house was complete, Sonabai's husband closed the door and forbad her from leaving it or seeing or being seen by anyone. During 15 years of severe isolation, Sonabai invented a style of art that was unprecedented in India's 4000 years of recorded history. She transformed the interior of her home with bas-relief sculptures to create a space of beauty, color, whimsy and texture. Sonabai brought inside the world she missed outside. Years later after her husband had once again allowed her to meet people, Sonabai was discovered by India's art world. Her life was never the same again. She was given India's highest awards and began to train other local artists in her unique style. In the early years of the 21st century, Dr. Stephen Huyler designed and curated an exhibition celebrating Sonabai and her remarkable vision. 'Sonabai: Another Way of Seeing' opened at Mingei International Museum of Art in San Diego, California, in July, 2009 and remained on display for 13 months. The public and professional response was overwhelmingly positive. This film explores that unusual installation.
