MORLEY, Henry (L.). b. Bishopsgate, London, probably 1 October 1834; d. date and place unknown. Morley was a music teacher, and organist of St Paul’s, Herne Hill, south-east London, until 1883. He is believed to have emigrated to the USA at some time after that date (Handbook to the Church Hymnary, 1927). He is identified as the composer of the tune NEWCASTLE on the evidence of a letter from Edwin Moss, editor of the London Tune Book (1875, not 1877 as is sometimes stated), to Carey Bonner* (The Choir, 1934). At some point, however, the tune was wrongly ascribed to Henry Killick Morley, organist of Greenwich Parish Church (see ‘B.S.M.’, 1986).
