Perfect Boiled Eggs: From Soft to Hard, Every Time Mastering the art of boiling eggs is essential for countless recipes, from breakfast staples to elegant appetizers. This guide covers the foolproof method of boiling eggs with added bicarbonate of soda (baking soda) for easy peeling, along with precise cooking times for achieving four distinct stages of doneness: soft-boiled, jammy medium, set yolk, and hard-boiled. We'll also share tips for preventing cracking and ensuring perfectly cooked eggs every time. Different stove tops and even altitude can affect cooking times, so these are general starting points. Tasting Notes: Soft-Boiled: Runny white, runny yolk. Rich, creamy yolk flavour. Jammy Medium: Set white, thick and slightly runny yolk. Rich, slightly custardy yolk flavour. Set Yolk: Set white, fully cooked but still moist yolk. Rich, savoury yolk flavour. Hard-Boiled: Set white, fully cooked, firm yolk. Savoury, slightly drier yolk flavour. Feel / Sensory Notes: Soft-Boiled: The white gives way with a tender, almost silken smoothness. It's not a firm resistance; it's a soft, yielding give that suggests the liquid yolk just beneath the surface. In essence, it's a feeling of delicate, warm, and yielding softness, a sensory experience that highlights the fragile beauty of a perfectly cooked soft-boiled egg. Jammy Medium: Pressing a jammy yolk offers a gentle, yielding resistance. The outer layer has a subtle firmness, but it quickly gives way to a warm, thick, and almost syrupy interior. The warmth is more pronounced than in a soft-boiled egg, and the yolk feels rich and concentrated. Set Yolk: There's a subtle springiness to it, a sign that the yolk is cooked through but not overdone. A set yolk offers a more substantial resistance. It's firm to the touch, but still tender. Hard-Boiled: The firmness is consistent throughout, with no yielding or give. A hard-boiled yolk feels firm and solid to the touch. It offers significant resistance. Recipe: Perfect Boiled Eggs Yields: Varies depending on the number of eggs. Prep time: 5 minutes Cook time: 5-12 minutes (depending on the desired doneness and egg size) Ingredients: Eggs (XL or Large) Water 1/2 teaspoon bicarbonate of soda (baking soda) per quart of water Ice bath (bowl of ice water) Instructions: Bring a pot of water to a rolling boil. Add the bicarbonate of soda. Gently lower the eggs into the boiling water using a bowl or slotted spoon. Set a timer for the desired cooking time (see chart below). Once the timer goes off, immediately transfer the eggs to the ice bath. Let the eggs cool completely in the ice bath (about 10-15 minutes). Gently tap the eggs on a hard surface to crack the shell all over. Peel the eggs under running cold water. Cooking Times: XL 6 minutes - Soft-Boiled 8 minutes - Jammy Medium 10 minutes - Set Yolk 12 minutes - Hard-Boiled Lrg (Large) 5 minutes - Soft-Boiled 7 minutes - Jammy Medium 9 minutes - Set Yolk 11 minutes - Hard-Boiled Tips/Variations: Egg freshness: Using fresh eggs is recommended but older eggs are less likely to stick to the shell. Video used fresh eggs. Preventing cracking: Adding bicarbonate of soda to the water and gently lowering the eggs helps prevent cracking. Ice bath: The ice bath is crucial for stopping the cooking process and preventing the yolks from overcooking. It also makes the eggs easier to peel. but cold water is fine too. Peeling: Tapping the egg all over before peeling helps loosen the shell. Peeling under running water can also make it easier. Timing: Cooking times may vary slightly depending on your stovetop, altitude, and the size of your eggs. It may take a few tries to find the perfect times for your kitchen. Soft-boiled variations: For a runnier soft-boiled egg, reduce the cooking time by 30 seconds to 1 minute. Jammy egg variations: For a more set jammy egg, increase the cooking time by 30 seconds to 1 minute. Storage: Hard-boiled eggs can be stored in the refrigerator for up to a week. #boiledeggs #perfecteggs #egghacks #cookinghacks #kitchenhacks #easyrecipe #breakfast #brunch #food #foodie #instafood #foodphotography #cooking101 #eggrecipes #softboiledegg #jammyegg #hardboiledegg #eggcellent #baking soda #bicarbonateofsoda #Daelastus #CookingWithDael #DaelAtHome Keep your eyes open for more videos coming as we will cover a variety of dishes, techniques and tips along the way.
