This visit to Sarawak Cultural Village ended up being one of the most engaging and meaningful cultural experiences I’ve had since moving to Malaysia. I came here expecting to walk through a cultural site, but what I experienced was so much more than that. This place is incredibly interactive. I didn’t just look at traditional houses – I walked through longhouses, met local people, talked with them, and learned how different communities in Sarawak lived and still live today. From the Orang Ulu warrior longhouse to Penan life in the forest, each section felt alive and deeply connected to the land. Along the way, I got to: Meet locals and share small, genuine moments together Try blow darts and learn about traditional hunting tools Watch a tribal man catch a fish Explore traditional crafts and everyday village life See gasing, the traditional spinning tops, being demonstrated What stood out to me was learning how different cultures – Orang Ulu, Penan, Melanau, Malay, and Chinese influences – coexist in Sarawak. And the performances… honestly, they were incredible. The traditional Sarawak dance show was powerful and emotional and it felt like the perfect way to end the cultural journey before walking out toward the beach. What really stayed with me was the setting itself. The jungle, the water, the long wooden walkways, the sounds of nature – the village feels like it’s part of the landscape, not built on top of it. It’s peaceful, grounding and beautiful in a way that’s hard to explain unless you experience it yourself. This wasn’t just educational – it was human. It felt real. And it’s easily one of my favourite cultural experiences I’ve had in Malaysia so far. If you’re curious about Sarawak, indigenous culture, traditional longhouses, or you just enjoy slow, immersive exploration, I think you’ll really enjoy this one.
