Pan of fire officers walking through street, in front of Belgian parliament STORYLINE Several hundred firefighters broke through police lines and hosed down the prime minister's office in Brussels to protest the government's tougher austerity measures, which includes cuts to their retirement plans. The demonstrating fire officers sprayed police with water and repellent from fire extinguishers during their protest. Firefighters are demanding that they should be able to retire earlier than the average worker, arguing their arduous job does not allow them to work into their sixties. Such demands run counter to government plans to have the overwhelming majority of the population work longer, so that the state can afford to pay an ever increasing pension bill as Belgium's population ages. Belgium has some 17-thousand firefighters, including five thousand professionals.
