On June 3rd 2017 we prepared for and made an attempt to break a high altitude record with a standard PPC. My Previous record was 14,300 feet above sea level and the minimum goal for this flight was 18k feet. I was really happy to pass this sealing with ease. A group of about 10 pilots started the challenge and two of us, Segev Baram and myself, Yariv Ben-Tovim, peaked at 19202 feet above sea level, measured by the GPS tracklog. The gear we have is a stock Powrachute Airwolf with no modifications and an Apco Lift as a high performance wing. Takeoff was at 5:10 AM, sea level, from the Ein-Vered airfield in the center of Israel. Took us about an hour and a half to reach max altitude. At that point, altitude gain was about 10 feet a min. The Rotax 912 engine worked flawlessly all the way. Max RPM went down to 4850 at max alt. From the climb diagrams, you could see how the climb ratio degrades with altitude, until it almost flattens at the max alt. For descent, I turned off the engine and simply made a quite glide down all the way to the landing. Temperature was FREEZING up there. I struggled getting my hands out of the heated gloves in order to take the video. It took seconds until I felt them frozen, and then a few min in the gloves to defrost again. So what will be next?! An engine with modifications? Maybe the new Honda engine from Powrachute?
