Experience San Francisco's newest historic streetcar! Rarely in service, we tracked down the streetcar built in 1952 for Brussels, Belgium, and painted to honor Zurich, Switzerland. Locations featured in this video include several stops along the Embarcadero and Market Street, including at the Ferry Building and Civic Center. Despite operating for most of its life in Belgium, the streetcar boasts American blood. It is a President's Conference Committee (PCC) streetcar, which was the creation of several prominent transit officials in the 1930s to promote streetcar usage and hamper the switch to private automobiles. It didn't work, and most PCC streetcar systems were dismantled in the 1950s and 60s and replaced by buses, but the market for such a system found its demand in Europe, which was still recovering from the destruction brought by World War II. Belgium saw an opportunity, and licensed PCC technology from the US. This streetcar was one of the first 50 to be delivered to Brussels, and operated as No. 7037. After much popularity, hundreds more were ordered for service in the Belgian capital, as well as in other cities across Europe. In 2004, the Market Street Railway facilitated the delivery of 7037 to San Francisco following its service retirement. It was quickly readied for service once again, and its number changed to 737 to avoid conflict with another MUNI vehicle. Under the request of then-Mayor Gavin Newsom, the streetcar's livery was painted to honor Zurich, Switzerland, a sister city of San Francisco. The streetcar has been riding the rails of the city since 2005, and is SF's newest historic streetcar to operate on the F Market and E Embarcadero lines. There's a possibility that it will receive a livery makeover once more to honor Brussels; either way, we hope to see it in service for many years to come.
