The InterCity 2152 of the Central Germany Connection on its journey between Gotha and Kassel Wilhelmshöhe. Shortly after the traction change between diesel and electric locomotives, the train continues towards Eisenach. The Lutherstadt Eisenach is also the only stop that is served on this section of the route as scheduled. The trains of the Central Germany Connection also meet in the same station, with the opposing train driving ahead with the IC control car. The Central Germany Connection is a railway connection between the Rhineland, Westphalia (now NRW), Northern Hesse, Thuringia and Saxony with two long-distance trains (2021). It used to run from West Germany, through Central Germany to East Germany in the Upper Silesian industrial area (Silesia). At the moment, the route on the edge of the low mountain ranges is only partially served systematically. A section of this connection runs from Chemnitz or Glauchau in the east via Gera and Jena to Weimar in the west. The Dresden-Werdau railway line (via Chemnitz-Glauchau), the Glauchau-Gößnitz railway line, the Gößnitz-Gera railway line and the Weimar-Gera railway line will be used. It is part of a possible direct rail connection from the Ruhr area or Frankfurt am Main via Eisenach, Erfurt, Weimar, Jena West, Jena-Göschwitz, Gera, Gößnitz, Werdau, Zwickau, Chemnitz to Dresden and thus represents an alternative route to the route currently used for long-distance traffic from Erfurt via Leipzig (instead of further south via Chemnitz) to Dresden.
