Here is a little more about the places and things we covered in our documentary: Cretan Traditions Cretan traditions are deeply rooted in the island’s ancient past and rural lifestyle. Music, dance, and storytelling play a major role in daily life, often accompanied by the lyra and laouto—traditional instruments. Hospitality is sacred, with locals treating guests as family. Seasonal festivals, religious celebrations, and local cuisine, such as dakos and raki, are vital expressions of Cretan identity passed down through generations. Minoan Civilization The Minoan civilization, flourishing on Crete from around 2700 to 1450 BCE, is considered Europe’s first advanced society. Known for their vibrant art, advanced architecture, and maritime trade, the Minoans built elaborate palaces, the most famous being Knossos. Their writing systems—Linear A and later Linear B—suggest a complex bureaucratic society. Minoan culture mysteriously declined, possibly due to natural disasters or invasion. Knossos Knossos is the largest and most significant archaeological site of the Minoan civilization, located near Heraklion in Crete. Often associated with the myth of the Minotaur and the labyrinth, the palace of Knossos was a multi-storied complex with frescoed walls, ceremonial rooms, and advanced plumbing. Excavated by Sir Arthur Evans in the early 20th century, Knossos provides valuable insight into the sophistication and artistry of Minoan life.
