This was the first master recorded on 6 June 1970, the third day of Elvis’ Nashville marathon in RCA’s studio B and was released on “Love Letters From Elvis” in June 1971. It is a song with a decidedly obvious country element and includes some great harmonica playing by Charlie McCoy. This is one of those songs where listening through the takes sees an obvious change in how the song is arranged. The first two takes see an intro featuring purely an acoustic guitar but from take three onwards a piano becomes the prominent instrument heard in the intro. The ninth and final take was chosen as the master and on 22 June post production on the song began. The first thing to be added was the backing vocal overdubs although there seems to be a bone of contention in this regard. Some sources suggest that the vocal overdubs could have been done on 21 September but on this day The Jordanaires were present but do not appear on the final master. The only songs listed to have been worked on that day were actually “Make The World Go Away”, “Funny How Time Slips Away” and “There Goes My Everything”. This confusion even seems to have reached the management of RCA who credited The Jordanaires for backing vocals on “When I’m Over You” on the back cover of the “Love Letters” album despite only featuring The Nashville Edition! Post Production at RCA’s studio A which saw the brass and strings added on 30 June before additional strings were added on 28 October 1970 making the song ready for release. As with all of these videos, to get the most out of the re-edited audio, I highly recommend you use ear /headphones and turn the volume up as much as you dare!
