Who was the first king of England? It wasn't Alfred the Great, but his grandson. Historian David Woodman from @robinsoncollegecambridge thinks more people should know that Æthelstan created England in 927AD. Professor Woodman’s new biography of Æthelstan, marking 1,100 years since his coronation, reveals his astonishing achievements including his brutal victory over a formidable Viking coalition at the Battle of Brunanburh. Amazingly, the earliest surviving manuscript portrait of Æthelstan, of any English monarch, appears in a 10th-century manuscript now cared for by the Parker Library at @CorpusChristiCambridge. Professor Woodman discusses this and other astonishing surviving sources, explains why Æthelstan isn’t better known, details the huge challenges he had to overcome, and considers what happened when he died. This film ends with some advice and encouragement to prospective students who might be interested in studying this area of history. Professor Woodman was interviewed by Tom Almeroth-Williams from the University of Cambridge's Research Communications team.
