Unlike other diseases, Root rot cannot be easily identified because here affected part is root. we cannot see the affected root unless we uproot them. When your plant is affected by root rot, you have to see for other visual symptoms like yellowing of leaves but in most of the cases. the plants will show wilting symptoms when their roots are attacked by fungus or bacteria. Reasons for root rot. Poor Drainage level When your pot has no drainage holes or less drainage holes, it reduces the outflow of excess water. when water stagnates in your pot for longer period of time, it reduces the availability of oxygen to your plants. When roots don't get required air, it will support the growth of unnecessary bacteria and fungus. So when they grow inside your potting media, it encourages the development of root rot in your plants. Over watering & water logged condition. Main reason for development of root rot is over watering & water logged condition. It creates anaerobic condition in your pots and over watering also leaches out very important nutrient from your potting media. Compact soil If you are using compact soil for your plants, you have to note that, compact soil will not have good drainage level and it won't allow your roots to spread well in growing media or soil. Fungus present in soil Using old garden soil may affect the health of your plants, because it will have disease carrying organisms. if you are unable to use new gardening soil, then you can go for soil sterilization. Soil sterilization Soil sterilization means killing all the harmful microorganisms present in the soil. You can do it by simply covering soil by polythene or plastic cover. When you cover the soil with polythene, it increases the temperature in soil and kills harmful microorganisms present in soil. It is found that sometimes even lack of sunlight also causes root rot plant disease. How to cure Root rot There are many simple ways to cure root rot in your plants, here are few listed below. 1. Replacing with healthy soil If you are using compact soil with very less drainage level, please consider replacing it with healthy soil. If you notice that the plant is attacked by Root rot, identify that by seeing the color of your roots. if the roots are white and rigid then they are healthy. if they are in brown or black color, then they are attacked by fungi or bacteria. So in such cases, you have to cut the diseases root and repot the plant in healthy soil 2. Use sterilized pots When you are using old seasoned pots, you have to sterilize them with some bleaching powder to kill all the bad micro organisms. 3. Check the soil wetness before watering plants. 4. Destruction of affected plants When you find diseased plant, either you need to collect it and throw them away from your garden or burn them, because they may become the source of causing the disease.
